Assume all you want

People that assume that they know what’s truly going on in people’s lives never cease to surprise me. Even with a lot of information at hand, people will never actually know what is actually happening, and they certainly don’t know the feelings, thoughts, and beliefs of those who they are talking about. It takes thinking that you are a very interesting person to actually believe that you know what a tweet with an emoji means. Like you can assume you know or you can draw up a story in your mind and interpret it however you want, for sure. But what I’m talking about is when people are so sure they know what’s really happening. There’s also this assumption that just because you interact online with a player or you have taken pictures with them at a match, that they are your friends. They are not. You don’t know them.

I’m not saying that you aren’t right in getting to a place where you get a good grasp of their personality or you sort of become familiar with their body language. I think its more than normal to have these thoughts. This is one of the best things about being a fan… we feel a connection and we have to believe its there in a way so it feel legitimate. What I’m trying to say is that there’s a big gap between that and then actually truly believing that you know who they are and what they are going through.

Of course, this topic today has to do with the “incident” between Katie McCabe and Vera Pauw. No need for me to go over what it was since it’s all over twitter. But Katie tweeted this emoji: 🤐

And… as predicted… the comments and replies to that have been some of the most absurd things I’ve ever seen in my life. That could’ve meant an infinity of things. Could it be related to that? Maybe, and it can also be an inside joke with a friend or a friendly bet she made with a sibling, etc etc etc. The bottom line is that it takes a very interesting type of person to go on in her mentions and say some stuff that is based on nothing.

But for sure the most frustrating thing is that this is taken away, at least in the public eye and not in my heart/mind/soul, from the real news which is that Ireland did well, made us all proud and showed an entire nation and generation upon generation of people that these players did the impossible. That’s what you need to focus on. And it sucks that all the tweets are about this, and ironically I feel I’m part of the problem.

Assumptions, assumptions, assumptions… and I’m always reminded of this:
